Job Summary



We are looking for a journalist who will report on Australia’s property market for a national audience. You will be part of Domain’s national news team, which covers a broad range of topics, from property data like the quarterly House Price Report, suburb results and market forecasting, to the latest fascinating and luxury listings, to interest rates and economic policy, as well as social issues like housing and rental affordability. There’s also property advice, a lot of lifestyle and heart-warming human interest stories, and annual editorial projects like The Block coverage. Knowledge of SEO/AIO is valued, although not essential. What we are really looking for is a gun journalist, news-style, who is a fast-learner looking to be rewarded for talent in versatility, news-gathering and news writing.



This position can be based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.





Responsibilities

  • Generate and proactively pitch unique story ideas and cover a broad range of topics
  • Jump on breaking news if required and fi le to tight deadlines but generally work ahead of time
  • Analyse and interpret property data reports when required for story ideas
  • Prepare clear, accurate, clean articles
  • Production work including supporting the content team on article building, image sourcing and input into the Wordpress CMS
  • Work with and build upon a network of editorial contacts
  • Work cross-functionally with the social, video, magazines and commercial news teams to ideate on cross-





About You



Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in journalism, preferably within a digital newsroom environment where breaking news was required
  • Track record of producing clean, accurate and thoughtful copy with minimal editing required
  • Generating and pitching original story ideas
  • Writing across a range of topics at varied paces, showing a clear curiosity for trends, new angles and creative thinking
  • Adaptibility: willing to learn new topics quickly (e.g. economic policy, housing trends)
  • Audience-first mindset: basic understanding of social media platforms and how news performs across them
  • Consistency: consistently maintain high standards of quality work for your editor
  • Independent and open-minded: Work autonomously yet maintain open communication and be receptive to feedback



Key attributes:

  • Versatility: comfortable jumping between hard news, data stories, lifestyle and human interest
  • 2-5 years experience, with experience in a news room
  • University-level degree in journalism/communications
  • Knowledge of, or an interest in, the Australian property market
